Eye Aspect Ratio

The width of the visible eye opening divided by its height, averaged across both eyes.

What is measured

The calculation

Average of each eye’s corner-to-corner width ÷ upper-to-lower eyelid height

Schematic illustration, not to scale. Lines show the measurement construction; this is not an ideal face or a scored result.

Why it matters

It separates a relatively elongated eye opening from a rounder one. The ratio concerns the opening between the eyelids, so it can change with expression even when the eye corners stay fixed.

  • Lower: relatively rounder or more open eyes.
  • Higher: relatively narrower vertical openings for their width.

Where the idea comes from

FaceIQ adaptation

This is a FaceIQ landmark-based description of facial shape. The linked research provides background on facial measurement or perception; it has not directly validated this exact formula or its score. [1]

A worked example

An opening 30 units wide and 10 high has a ratio of 3.0. At a height of 12 with the same width, it becomes 2.5.

Example values explain the calculation. They are not a target range and are not measurements of the schematic above.
