Nasofacial Angle

The angle at the nasal root between the nose-tip direction and the chin direction.

What is measured

The calculation

Acute angle: pronasale → nasion → pogonion

In these guides, nasion means the nasal root, subnasale the nose base, and pogonion the most forward chin point. Frankfort refers to the direction from the ear-opening landmark to the lower orbital landmark.

Why it matters

It places the nose against a broader facial line. A change in chin projection alters that line and can change the apparent prominence of the same nose.

  • Lower: the nose-tip and chin directions are closer together.
  • Higher: the directions diverge more.

Where the idea comes from

Clinical reference

Nasal angles and projection are used to describe profile shape. Preference studies have tested edited noses; FaceIQ’s particular landmarks and score ranges should not be treated as universal conclusions from those studies. [1]

A worked example

A 30° result means the two rays from the nasal root diverge by 30°. Moving the chin can alter that angle without changing nose length.

Example values explain the calculation. They are not a target range and are not measurements of the schematic above.

The sources below explain the history or related evidence. FaceIQ’s score weights and reference ranges are model settings; these papers do not collectively validate the scoring system.
